The true cost of fitness

It’s known that people like to spend money to make sure they are in the best shape possible, but this figures will shed a new sad reality on the true cost of fitness.

The modern day fitness junky doesn’t seem to be satisfied anymore with a plain workout routine and the classic meal plan that has shaped thousands of bodies for decades. The modern day fitness obsessed feels the inexplicable need to buy many clothing accessories and healthy snacks to go along with his lifestyle.

At least this is what comes out of the recent survey conducted by the online store MyProtein, which revealed that the average British person spends £124 a month on health and fitness, which adds up to £94,658 in a lifetime.

“I do spend quite a bit on gym clothes as I do really like to look good when I work out, it helps with my self esteem, and I do also go to a few different classes at my gym which can be expensive but I consider it an important investment for my health,” said chemist Sophie Gillibrand, 23, who considers herself a gym aficionado.

“I do think there are cheaper ways of getting in shape, such as running in the park, and you definitely don’t need to spend as much on gym clothes, but if it’s your hobby and you enjoy it and you can afford it I don’t see why you shouldn’t do it. I personally also like to alternate my workouts with yoga and pilates classes, and that of course comes with a price,” continued Gillibrand.

Clothing represents in fact 24% of that total amount of money that people spend on fitness, but at the first place of the list there are supplements, as people spend on average £40 a month on protein shakes, protein bars and vitamins as a support for their intense work out schedule.

Customer service representative Thomas Payne, 24, doesn’t spend much on clothing and gym accessories, but does prefer to invest in supplements and has been for years.

“I started working out when I was in university and at first I was loosing weight instead of gaining it because I was exercising too much. That’s when I realized that if I wanted to build mass I had to use some sort of supplement to help me maintain a healthy diet and recover after exercising,” said Payne, who is now fully converted to protein shakes.

“I am not really into bars and all the crazy healthy food but I do love protein powder and have been using it for a couple of years now. It’s just so easy and I feel like it does make a difference for me,” added Payne.

The rest of categories people spend money on are gym memberships, meal plan advices and personal training sessions, which are all valid things to invest money in if you want to lead a healthy but not boring life, but it’s important to remember that it’s also possible to be fit and healthy without having to spend a hundred pounds a month.
