According to the 2017 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, the UK health and fitness keeps growing; this is thanks to the private sector which has a higher number of clubs, members and market value.

The figures state that there are over 9.7 million fitness members in the UK which has boosted the penetration rate to an all-time high of 14.9%. That means that one in every seven people in the UK has a membership.

But how many of those 9.7 million fitness members fall in love at the gym?

Forget about going to a club on a Saturday night, spending money on drinks and probably going back home alone. Forget about dressing up and go on the lookout for a prospective partner.

Many are finding the love of their lives during a boxing session or classic weight lifting.

It might not seem like the ideal situation or atmosphere to fall in love, but you would be surprise.

According to co-host of VH1’s Couple Therapy, Dr. Jenn Berman, participating in a fitness activity allows a person to meet someone overtime. He also adds that exercise bonds people over on a much stronger base, that is also because – during training – people are high on endorphins ‘rather than drunk on a couple of Cosmopolitans,” said Berman.

“I was in a boxing class for about five months. One time this guy came in and started stretching up. I caught his eyes and from that it was history!” said Carmen Labres, 28.

“Now we’re engaged and expecting our first child,” she added.

A study commissioned by Kettler sampled 2,000 participants and found out that 50% of those said to go to the gym to check out the opposite sex or meet friends. A third of those who took part in the survey admitted that they never even broke sweat at the gym.

Another study conducted by Nuffield Health, found that 10.5% of members actually live with someone they met at the gym.

“I’ve met my boyfriend two years ago. We were both members in our local gym during a cycling class. After a bit of courage on my part, I went to him and started chatting,” said Leandro Lestrange, 26.

“We live together now and have a French Bulldog named Iñacio.”
